Toys are really important in different stages of a child‘s development. It is up to the grown‐ups to figure out which toys are appropriate for the child‘s age as well as to ascertain that the toys are safe for use. There are still many skills that a child can learn through playing with his educational toys, but one thing is for certain ‐ the key player in his growth is still human interaction. According to Marilyn Segal, Ph.D., dean emeritus and director of the professional development program at Mailman Segal Institute for Early Childhood Studies at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the most important toy is the parent and other caregivers because babies crave one‐on‐one social interaction and need the security it provides.
While the kids‘ bedroom/quarters should be your main storage for keeping children‘s stuff, you can also keep some in the family room and the bathroom. However, make sure to minimize the clutter as much as possible. In bathrooms, for instance, designate a bucket that will be used mainly for storing toys your kids use during bath time. As for the family room, you can also keep some toys in a cabinet or invest in an affordable toy bin you can easily hide in the room.
When I was a kid, I never really had much toys so I guess I early on, I already knew to take care of the few toys that I had. My dad, who was a bit of a handyman, made me my own wooden toy box painted bright yellow with little compartments inside, which made toy keeping as much fun for me as playing. Now that I have two kids of my own, I have taken the values that I got from preserving toys from my childhood to present. While I can afford more toys for my children now than my parents from back then, I do not splurge and still keep a practical approach when it comes to getting the kids toys. Many of the toys that my seven year old has used from before is still being enjoyed by my four year old today.
Organizing your kid‘s room or personal space can really be quite a challenge. This is more so if you have more than one kid. The problem mostly with cleaning a kid‘s room is that it gets messed up again as soon as you‘re done cleaning it. Kids are not aware how important it is to have a clean room, and they can‘t exactly understand this if you explain it to them. What most mothers need to understand is that explaining things to kids alone wouldn‘t really make the picture stick. Kids follow more by example. Remember the phrase ”monkey‐see, monkey‐do”?
Although toy storage can be quiet expensive, you don‘t have to spend a lot of money on it. There are a couple of ways to keep your kid‘s room organized even without purchasing toy storage. You know those clear boxes used for shoe storage? You could always use those keeping your kids‘ toys, especially for the little toys that would get lost in big toy boxes. You can have one kind of toy per box. Like, one box for building blocks; one box for toy cars and one box for art supplies. This way, your kids can just grab one and play. No need to take all toys out, unlike if you‘re kid has only one box for all the toys.
It‘s a fact that the life expectancy of kids toys are short but we have to face the reality; with the high pricing cost of basic commodities nowadays it is really not practical for us to buy toys frequently to replace broken ones. It is therefore important that we teach our kids how to maintain their toys. We know that at one point those toys will be broken but what we could do is to extend the life span of those toys.
