In my research, I‘ve seen more websites than not who claim to offer outstanding resumes without any proof at all. I‘ve even gone as far as contacting these companies to request a sample and have been told that since ”each client is different, a sample won‘t help.” I don‘t buy that - a good writer is a good writer, period and there should be nothing to hide. If you do see samples, make sure they are legible and not small graphics of what it will ”look like,” as you have to be able to read it!
Following that train of thought, I have always believed that you should have a number of different resumes prepared. In a previous article, I talked about having the wherewithal to adapt one‘s elevator speech to the situation one finds him or herself in. Likewise, the cover letter and resume you send should be tailored to the needs of the person receiving it.
If the beginning grabs the viewer they will likely watch all of the 90 to 120 seconds of the video resume - and this is all the time you have to extol all your virtues, abilities, qualifications, special abilities, technical and other skills and experiences. The plus point of this kind of resume template is that you can intersperse your video with other images - charts, graphs, even personal recommendations and certificates. You can even add visual samples of previously done work - this can be particularly useful for when applying for a job with visual media, film, design, graphics or video production. It can make the resume sample far more interesting and greatly increase its impact on the prospective employee.
Are you serious about getting a better job? Do you keep losing out to people that probably aren‘t as qualified as you? These days it‘s not so much about who is best suited to the role, it‘s more about who is best prepared for the interview process. This also includes being ready and able to communicate their value and worth during the interview. This is one of the most critical and yet highly overlooked pieces of job seeking skills. If you don‘t have this skill, and one of your competitors does, you could easily lose out, even you are better suited to the job. This is even more likely if their resume is professionally produced and formatted.
One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is, ”How do I build a perfect resume, one that is guaranteed to get me a job?” Here is my answer to this dilemma. Every employer out there has a slightly different idea of how they want to see a resume laid out and what kind of information should be on it. Over the years I have been continuously interviewing employers, recruiters and resume writers so I can keep up to date with the times and see what employers expect in a resume from a potential candidate for the positions they are offering and how resume writers think a potential candidate‘s resume should be written. The bottom line is, there is no one right answer. There are many different ways to write a resume that are all just as good as the next. There may not be a perfect resume but you can get close, very close.
However, many of the professionals I know who are in the business of certifying individuals are frequently right on the money. Though certifications are certainly helpful in your decision making process, you cannot automatically discount a service that does not boast any. Most certifications require payment in order to take a test or complete a course and there are many qualified, talented professionals who do not feel the need for investing money just to prove what they already know - that they‘re skilled in what they do and have proven their mettle over the years, gaining more knowledge and hands-on experience than any certification could demonstrate.
