Scanning for keywords is not used by 100% of employers, however, a very high percentage of them do use this technique. Think about it for a second. They will sometimes receive 100‘s and possibly thousands of resumes for various positions being offered. It would take way to much time for each and every resume to be read through. In some cases, companies even use software which scans resumes for keywords. If these targeted key words are not found, well, in computer terms...delete, delete, delete.
I am going to assume that you are now asking yourself, what are targeted key words and where and how do I use them? There are two trains of thought over the portion of a resume called the Career Objective. Some resume writers and consultants feel it is necessary and some say not. In my opinion and experience, adding a career objective section at the beginning of a resume is very important. This is where you can place targeted key words that will help to get you through to the next level, the interview. If these keywords are not found in a quick scan of your resume than your resume goes directly to jail and does not pass go. In other words, no interview for you!
I‘ve been asked a number of times for a resume overnight or for ”discounts” on quoted services because they have only budgeted X amount of dollars. First of all, the better your resume, the more opportunities you will receive...and there is no way a writer can ”throw something together” without taking the time to learn a great deal about you! If a service promises overnight work, you have to ask yourself why? If they are that readily available, then they aren‘t a very busy practice - probably for a reason. Most quality services offer a several day turnaround time and the writer typically spends several hours on each project. A quality, working resume can‘t be rushed if it‘s done right (and beware of any service who can ”fit you in” in a day. Good writers are busy for a reason).
Of equal importance is the overall appearance of your resume. The first thing any potential employer, or personnel manager, evaluating your resume will notice is it‘s appearance. There are a number of things you can do to improve on the overall appearance of your resume. Using a higher quality of paper to print your resume on is easily the simplest thing you can do if you are sending a potential employer a printed copy of your resume. Pick out a nice looking, more expensive grade of paper. The next thing to consider is the quality of the content in the resume. It‘s very important that you make sure the writing on your resume looks good so be sure to use a clear and easy to read font.
The word resume comes from the French language and is defined as ”use of past participle of resumer to resume, sum up”. Therefore it is the purpose of a resume to summarize your experience, knowledge, skills and accomplishments. In the spirit of summarisation, it is therefore, important that your resume is from 1 to 3 pages long. Don‘t be tempted to make your resume any longer than this, even if you have a lot to tell, after all you certainly don‘t want to bore the reader.
One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is, ”How do I build a perfect resume, one that is guaranteed to get me a job?” Here is my answer to this dilemma. Every employer out there has a slightly different idea of how they want to see a resume laid out and what kind of information should be on it. Over the years I have been continuously interviewing employers, recruiters and resume writers so I can keep up to date with the times and see what employers expect in a resume from a potential candidate for the positions they are offering and how resume writers think a potential candidate‘s resume should be written. The bottom line is, there is no one right answer. There are many different ways to write a resume that are all just as good as the next. There may not be a perfect resume but you can get close, very close.
